CUS601: Unit 2: Philosophy of Education

                                                                        Reflection

Whatever we do in life, it is guided by the philosophy of an individual. Similarly, education system too is guided by four main philosophies which align with the Royal Kasho. Educational philosophy is the guiding principle which helps curriculum developers in bringing out the best designed curriculum. The four philosophies are perennialism, essentialism, progressivism, and reconstructionism. All these philosophies have values and goals that are required in 21st century. Essentialism aims to provide basic skills and knowledge to students, perennialism aims at teaching values and principles that are everlasting in the life of each individual, progressivism focuses on learning by doing, and reconstructionism on rebuilding.

Under the educational philosophy, we did group presentation on how GNH philosophy is imbedded in our education system. From the presentation, I came to realize that whatever topics we were taught and the activities we were asked to do; there was a goal behind it. My takeaways from the presentations made by my mates are that the reconstructionism is more relatable and interesting one among other philosophies as it focuses on making students become agents of change in a holistic manner. I strongly feel that with change in time, youths should be given the lead role to be the great citizen, globally and locally, and this is being fulfilled by the philosophy of reconstructionism. Aim of this philosophy is to change students to become contributing citizens that brings social changes by addressing social issues. It is purely student-centric where students are given an opportunity or platform to critique and come up with changes accordingly.
