Unit 3: The Bases of Curriculum
Reflection
There are four bases of curriculum that acts as pillars of curriculum development. The four bases are nature of learning and learning styles, social forces, human development, and nature of knowledge. This unit mainly talks about the theories of learning and bases of curriculum that gives a description on how curriculum developers should design a curriculum according to the needs of a child. I have come to know that different students have different learning style which we as a teacher need to be mindful about, so that we can cater to the needs of different students. There are ten contemporary social forces that influence curriculum planning and innovation. We worked in groups to discuss those ten social forces where we posted our understanding on the issues that we got. From the group presentation on each issue, I learnt that ten kinds of social forces act as a guidance towards evolving and dynamic curriculum. As a teacher, one must keep the ten contemporary social forces in mind and develop a flexible and productive curriculum to benefit the future learners. I got to share my perspectives about 'changing world of work' that curriculum should focus on innovation, solution design, agility to respond quickly to changing markets and opportunities. The curriculum developers try to develop curriculum according to the needs of job market. The focus is given on building skills of students including skills in using technologies as the job market needs competent employees with skills appropriate for the work. Students are taught to take ownership of their own learning to adapt with the changing demands of the job market. Though all forces seem important, I found this more relevant in this technological era. This unit also talks about human development and learning styles of different individuals.
